Boldyn Networks and INWIT together for #Roma5G

30 July 2024 | Rome, Italy

Boldyn Networks (Boldyn), one of the largest neutral host providers and the world’s leader in public transport systems’ 5G connectivity, announced today that INWIT is exercising its option to purchase 51% of Boldyn’s Smart City Roma Spa, the special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the delivery of the #Roma5G project. Boldyn secured the 25-year public-private partnership concession for the implementation of #Roma5G at the end of last year. The completion of INWIT’s investment remains subject to regulatory approval which is expected over the coming months.

“We welcome INWIT’s participation with Boldyn in the flagship #Roma5G project. The 5G infrastructure we are building in Rome is to support the whole industry in delivering improved mobile communications services, INWIT’s involvement helps achieve that,” said Andrew McGrath, Group Chief Commercial Officer at Boldyn Networks. “Boldyn is committed to building 5G infrastructure in Italy, a market considered strategic for us. We are promoting targeted long-term investments to consolidate our position as a leader in telecommunications infrastructure, supporting the digital transition of the country,” he added.

The #Roma5G project originated from the signing of a concession contract between Boldyn Networks and Roma Capitale at the end of 2023. Through this project, Boldyn will design, operate and maintain shared infrastructure that will equip Rome’s metro and major public places with a 5G network, Wi-Fi, and Internet of Things. It will offer the best connectivity and security to 3 million residents and over 15 million annual visitors, whose numbers are expected to grow significantly for the upcoming Jubilee 2025.

With #Roma5G, the city’s digital transition is accelerated, making it ‘fast, digital, safe, and sustainable’. Overall, the project foresees investments in infrastructure of over 90 million euros in the next 5 years, a portion of which comes from public funds.

Boldyn Networks will continue to play a key role within the #Roma5G project at least through the 5-year build or more until the completion of the 5G infrastructure construction program, ensuring that the project continues to benefit from Boldyn's unique expertise during this crucial phase.
